A lot of people wonder why plastic surgery is also known as cosmetic surgery. Some think that plastic surgery is a more general procedure while cosmetic surgery is only for corrective procedures which aid people in their fight against aging. Do you want to learn more? Visit official site.
To set the record straight, the word ‘plastic’ is derived from the Greek word ‘plastikos’ which simply means to ‘mold’ or to ‘shape.’ This is exactly what is involved in cosmetic surgery, to reshape or to mold the area of the body which will result to the correction of imperfections caused by a number of reasons including birth defects and trauma.
Many think that this type of surgery is a recent medical technique; it is not. This procedure has been around for centuries, in fact the earliest recorded plastic surgery can be dated almost two thousand years ago. The Indians in the past used skin for grafting in an attempt to reconstruct a body part. The Romans used similar techniques to repair the severed or torn ears of soldiers after a battle.
The truth is, most of the plastic surgery techniques were developed in the heat of battle, where severed body parts had to be sewn back to save lives as well as maintain the number of soldiers. In fact, the method was the most common thing used in World War II where Canadian and New Zealand doctors were known to practice the procedures on the field.
The most famous Canadian doctor who practiced plastic surgery during WWI was Dr. E. Fulton Risdon. The one from New Zealand was Dr. Sir Harold Gillies. Both these men are now considered as the fathers of modern plastic surgery. In fact, a cousin of Sir Gillies, Archibald McIndoe practiced plastic surgery on the field during WWII.
The evidence that the procedures used by these doctors gave rise to the need of other doctors to apply the same methods to treat patients who went through considerable trauma, not necessarily because of a war. Soon, many doctors saw that the procedures and methods used in plastic surgery reduced scarring especially on the face where it was more visible.
Today, the procedure has grown exponentially and is no longer just used for treatment. Today, people can choose this surgery for body lift or body sculpting to improve the way they look. However, the idea behind the procedure remains the same: the mold and to shape. The term cosmetic surgery is actually just a nickname given to the doctors who perform the corrective procedures.
